The El Cid neighborhood in West Palm Beach is a highly desirable and historic community located within the city’s historic district. The neighborhood has its origins dating back to 1875 when Benjamin Lainhart, the first permanent resident of the western shore of Lake Worth, built a cabin near Barcelona Road. The El Cid district came into its own during the 1920s Florida land boom, developing a concentration of outstanding period architecture. Homes in El Cid feature Mediterranean Revival and Mission architectural styles, and the entire neighborhood is listed on the local, state, and National Register of Historic Places. There are 281 historical buildings within the El Cid community, making it one of the most distinctive, desirable and well-known neighborhoods in all of the Palm Beaches.

Homes in El Cid Area

The homes in the El Cid neighborhood are known for their exceptional architectural styles and historic significance. The dominant architectural style in El Cid is Mediterranean Revival, featuring characteristics like stucco walls, red tile roofs, arched windows and doorways, and decorative tile work. Some homes also exhibit Mission style elements, such as low-pitched red tile roofs, white stucco walls, and ornamental detailing. A few residences blend Spanish Colonial features, including wrought-iron balconies, courtyards, and decorative plasterwork. The majority of homes in El Cid were built during the 1920s Florida land boom, giving the neighborhood a cohesive vintage aesthetic. Many of the homes are considered contributing structures to the El Cid Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Prominent architects of the era, such as Maurice Fatio and Howard Major, designed several of the neighborhood’s most impressive residences. Home sizes in El Cid range from around 2,000 square feet to over 6,000 square feet, with the larger waterfront properties being the most valuable. Lot sizes are typically modest, with homes situated close together on tree-lined, winding streets. Many homes feature private boat docks, pools, guest cottages, and other luxury amenities.

El Cid offers residents and visitors a wealth of attractions and activities within close proximity. From world-class art museums to unique shopping and dining experiences, this historic community provides an abundance of things to see and do. One of the major draws of the El Cid area is its close proximity to the Norton Museum of Art. This impressive institution houses a renowned collection of European, American, Chinese, and contemporary art. The museum’s galleries feature works by masters such as Monet, Picasso, and O’Keeffe, and it also hosts rotating special exhibitions. Just a short stroll from the Norton is the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, where visitors can immerse themselves in a serene outdoor setting featuring massive sculptures by the eponymous artist. For those interested in the visual arts, the Armory Art Center is located right in the heart of El Cid. This non-profit organization offers classes, exhibitions, and programs across a variety of mediums, from painting and ceramics to metalsmithing and digital art.
