Top 10 Reasons to Live in Florida

Top 10 Reasons to Live in Florida

Florida was just named the number one state in the country to move to.  It’s not a new thing either.  Take Palm Beach County.  The population was 576,683 in 1980. Today, in only 43 short years its nearly tripled at over 1.5 million.

There are lots of reasons why for this.  Here are Echo’s Top 10 “Must-Know” Reasons.

  1. Gloating.

This involves many of the points below but Gloating is all by itself on the best reason to live in Florida.  Once you move here it’s obsessive fun to gloat to all your friends up north.  Screenshots of the weather.  Money you save. Lifestyle.  It’s endless. Your friends will hate you but that’s the point.

2. Taxes

Show me the money!  It’s here in Florida.  You gloat to your friends up North and they go arghhh and shrug. They hear what the savings are and on a one year basis it’s not a deal breaker. But what about when you start adding up those years?

Here is the 10 year breakdown.  See?  More gloating!

State Tax Rate Earnings of 100000 Paid over 1 year Paid over 10 years
Florida 0% $100,000 $0 $0
California 13.30% $100,000 $13,300 $133,000
Connecticut 6.99% $100,000 $6,990 $69,900
Delaware 6.60% $100,000 $6,600 $66,000
Illinois 4.95% $100,000 $4,950 $49,500
Maryland 5.75% $100,000 $5,750 $57,500
Massachusetts 9.00% $100,000 $9,000 $90,000
New Jersey 10.75% $100,000 $10,750 $107,500
New York 10.90% $100,000 $10,900 $109,000
Ohio 3.99% $100,000 $3,990 $39,900
Pennsylvania 3.07% $100,000 $3,070 $30,700
Rhode Island 5.99% $100,000 $5,990 $59,900

*Many states have variable rates based on how much income one family earns. This chart does not reflect those lower calculations but just gives a general idea of why there is such an influx of high income earners to Florida. Remember, I’m gloating.

3. Weather

After money it’s the weather as a close second to income tax savings.  Sunny and 80 degrees. Shorts and flip flops year-round.  Outdoor dining, the beach, golf, boating, you name it.  Leave your shovel, galoshes, long underwear and ice scraper back in Boston.

4. Culture

We moved here in 2000, the first year the Kravis Center for the Arts opened. We’ve seen concerts there, Broward, Miami Arena, Panther Stadium.   Theatre at the Maltz in Jupiter.  Norton Art Museum. Palm Beach Symphony. Light House Art Center in Jupiter.  It goes on and on and all close by with easy parking.

5. Schools.

There are lots of choices from public, charter and private. Both of our kids have been in public and charter schools and now at FSU and UCF.  Here is a bit more information on our schools.

6. Nature

This is a bit underrated.  One of my favorite places is Riverbend Park on land.  So much to see in the sea.  Lots of other state and national parks.

7. Driving Distance & Travel

You can take 20 different vacations throughout the state. From Key West to Saint Augustine to Disney..  Just last weekend, myself and my wife went to the iconic Fontainebleau to celebrate her birthday for a getaway weekend. The Miami Beat Pool Party Music though turned to depressing Urgent  Care waiting room music. Why they would have a RUSTY Nail  on the Astro Turf of the pool deck is beyond?!? I asked for soap and water and they brought flavored watermelon and a cocktail!

However, that case of Fountaine  Blues  usually doesn’t occur. There are like 20 different states and cultures all from within Florida. Take a look at our guide to getaways in Florida.

8. Fresh and amazing.

If you live in Chicago, the fresh fish is Whitefish. In Boston, you get cod.  We have everything.  All brought in daily between here and the Bahamas.  Grouper, Triple Tail, Pompano, Snapper, Wahoo.  The list goes on and on.  Delicious.  Take a look at our restaurant guide for some of the choices.

9. Florida Man.

Oh it’s weird here.  Florida does have our share of crazies and we are proud of them.  Just last weekend I saw a great scotch tape commercial with this Florida man handmade license plate.

However, sometimes Florida man strikes their good side. Here is our very own Andrew Levy showing us a true Florida Man Hero.

10. Activities you never thought of

It’s hard to snorkel in Lake Michigan. It’s cold and maybe you can see a rock and your hand.  Here though, jump into the water at Coral Cove Park in Jupiter Island and an underwater world opens up.
