Florida Spring Break

Florida Spring Break

Florida Spring Break

There is an old saying that you can’t fight city hall.  Perhaps a better saying would be, you can’t fight spring break college kids. Every year and in just a few weeks, the college kids descend to South Beach and Fort Lauderdale and do what college kids do. Party. Booze. Swimsuits. More partying till the wee hours of the morning. The news covers this like the Discovery Channel covers Shark Week. Entrepreneurs film all this action and make boatloads of money by selling “Spring Breakers Go Wild” films. And for a premium you can get “Uncensored Spring Breakers Go Wild.”

Now each year the older folk residents vow to do something about it and complain to their local politician. The local politician on the one hand loves the revenue but on the other hand needs to pacify the constituents. They pledge to crack down with curfews and arrests.  Bullhorns, tear gas, paddy wagons. The problem is South Beach is South Beach. The weather, beaches, and nightclubs are just too tempting. Good luck to them in this being the year to stop the spring breakers going wild!

The rest of the northern artic states want to get away as well. For the Midwest and Northeast, South Florida and Disney World are always jammed.  People tired of the freeing cold need that break.  However, if you live in South Florida, it’s kind of the opposite. Some take week trips within Florida. Here is a guide for 22 trips you can do within Florida. Click Here to Read about the 22 Trips within Florida

There are others who take an annual trip and go skiing in the Rockies. But the best trip we’ve ever done was 2 years ago. In 2014, we did a family summer trip to San Francisco and Yosemite. We joined a 3-day adventure group of 11 and camped at Yosemite. The leader of the group was a guy named Vern Nelson who named me Jefe’, the minute I stepped into the van. Lots of 20 somethings and we were the only family.  Our kids had a blast. Since then we’ve done trips all over the county to visit National Parks. Yellowstone, Glacier, Badlands, Crater Lake, Acadia, New River Gorge, Big Bend, The Smokies, and the 3 in Florida to name a few. Two, we did with grandparents, and they were great bonding experiences. Every time I went on a trip, I called Vern who always gave me some secret spots. So, when our daughter, Jade, was stressed out from all the college applications, we decided to do one more big trip while we had her captive.  Visiting Bryce, Zion, Moab, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Las Vegas is a tricky trip. In the summer it can be brutally hot. But the advantage of Florida spring break is our kids get out first and it’s earlier than the rest of the country.  I really didn’t know how to design that big a trip on a time crunch. I called my buddy Vern, and he designed it for me. He wrote like a 20-page paper on it that was filled with secret spots, funky affordable and comfortable places to stay, eateries, history lessons, and hilarious commentary. Our daughter said it was her favorite trip of all time.  If you have a child or grandchild locally here, these are the trips that memories are made of.  Vern swore to never share the itinerary because of some of the secret spots. Tragically, Vern died last week getting off an airplane in Chile to guide a tour of Patagonia. I published what Vern wrote for all to share. Take the trip and see America if you haven’t done this one. You won’t regret it.
