Loxahatchee is a predominantly rural community located in northwest Palm Beach County just north of the town of Wellington and northwest of Royal Palm Beach. It sits about 17 miles west of the city of West Palm Beach. The name “Loxahatchee” is a Seminole Indian word meaning “River of Turtles”, derived from the Loxahatchee River that flows through the area. One of Loxahatchee’s biggest attractions is the 600-acre Lion Country Safari – Florida’s only drive-through safari park. The safari park is home to over 1,000 animals and also features an amusement park with rides, a water play area, restaurants, and shops. It is a major tourist draw for the region. In 2006, a portion of Loxahatchee was incorporated as the town of Loxahatchee Groves in order to help preserve the community’s rural character as development continued in the surrounding region. Loxahatchee Groves and the greater Loxahatchee area remain one of the most rural communities in close proximity to West Palm Beach.
Loxahatchee is characterized by relatively loose land use regulations and large lot sizes, typically ranging from 1 to 20 acres per property. This has resulted in a semi-rural, equestrian-friendly environment with many large estate homes and properties. The homes in Loxahatchee are spacious, often with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and ample lot space. Many feature amenities like stables, pastures, and room for keeping horses and other livestock. Some properties may even have space for more exotic animals. Due to the large lot sizes, the homes in Loxahatchee have a more spread out, private feel compared to more typical suburban developments. Neighbors are not packed tightly together, allowing for more open space and privacy around each residence. The architectural styles of homes in Loxahatchee vary, but many have a rustic, country/farmhouse aesthetic that complements the rural character of the area. Features like metal roofs, wrap-around porches, and board-and-batten siding are common. The flexible zoning and open land in Loxahatchee also provides opportunities for custom home building on large parcels. This allows residents to design their dream homes and properties tailored to the rural equestrian lifestyle.
One major attraction in Loxahatchee area is the Loxahatchee River, which flows through the community. The river and its surrounding wetlands and conservation areas offer excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation like canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and birdwatching. The river is designated as a Wild and Scenic River, protecting its natural state. Just a short drive from Loxahatchee is Riverbend Park, a 676-acre county park situated along the Loxahatchee River. The park has hiking trails, camping facilities, environmental education programs, and access points for launching canoes and kayaks onto the river. Loxahatchee is also home to numerous private horse farms and boarding stables that cater to the area’s large population of horse owners. The community’s rural character and plentiful open land make it an ideal location for those with a passion for horses. While Loxahatchee maintains a very rural feel, it is conveniently located just a short 20-30 minute drive from larger commercial and employment hubs like Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach. This allows residents to enjoy the peaceful country setting while still having easy access to big-city amenities.
Lion Country Safari is a 600-acre drive-through safari park that is the only one of its kind in the state of Florida. It first opened in 1967 and has been a major tourist attraction in the Loxahatchee area for decades. The safari park is home to over 1,000 animals representing over 100 different species. Some of the animals visitors can see on the drive-through portion include lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, antelopes, and more. The animals roam freely within their spacious enclosures, providing an immersive safari experience for guests. In addition to the drive-through safari, Lion Country Safari also features an amusement park with 5 rides, including a log flume ride, a sky ride, and a train that tours the property. There is also a “water spray-ground” play area for kids, as well as several dining options and gift shops. Visitors can purchase feed to hand-feed the giraffes, which is a very popular attraction. They can also book behind-the-scenes tours and animal encounters for a more up-close experience with some of the park’s animals. Lion Country Safari covers over 600 acres, making it one of the largest safari parks in the United States. Its massive size and diverse animal collection make it a unique and exciting destination, drawing visitors from all over to experience the “safari” atmosphere right in Loxahatchee.
