Is Matt Groening’s house haunted? It has the old bones to be. Built in 1910 as Gorham House, it was one of the first LA designs by early 20th-Century architect Robert D. Farquhar. Farquhar went on to build Beverly Hills High School – surely a scene of terror for many a student over the years.
But in any case, the price for the tiny postage stamp-sized lot would scare many a typical home buyer.
Groening’s home has a strange combination of more bathrooms than bedrooms; another strange aspect – no views on site!
Several aspects of Groening’s home, located at 336 Adelaide Drive in Santa Monica, seem strange to us…
First – it’s just a few blocks from the beach, but is strangely absent of any views or real space on any side except the front. Only a sliver of trees buffers it from its westerly neighbor, and two sides are just a “doh” away from the street (perfect sidewalk access for a Bart Simpson-type to get plenty of skateboarding in, though!).
Second – the enormous price tag for such a land-locked home: Groening reportedly paid $11.65 million for this oddly-shaped manse.
Third – the home features a strange mix of 5 bedrooms and 7½ baths… those must be some bathrooms! Since purchasing, Groening has added a 2-bedroom guest house with 2 baths, kitchen, fitness room/Pilates studio, a billiards room/man cave, multiple balconies, and a spacious home theater with seating for 10 people to the home.
Except for the two postage stamp-sized green spaces in front, it seems Groening got “tricked” into settling for views of his neighbor’s home and the surrounding street.
So much for the tricks – how about a reader’s treat? Well, what scary home would be complete without a place to tell ghost stories?
This time of year The Simpsons series is known for its annual “Treehouse of Terror” Halloween episodes, and Groening’s house may just have a Treehouse of Horror all its own!
A treehouse of horror, perfect for plotting Bart-worthy schemes and telling ghost stories.
What scary doings has Groening been up to this Halloween season? Here’s a quick screen grab from this week’s episode – Treehouse of Horror XXVI:
This week’s Simpson’s episode includes a tribute to the classic “Godzilla” movies with Homer substituting as the classic city-wrecker.
