Why We Live In Florida

Linoleum & Corn Silos – Why We Live in Florida

If you are planning a vacation to Kansas – Council Bluffs – Omaha – Sioux City – Fargo, ND and Minnesota, then I’m your man!

My sister just did a Vacay in Sicily, Lake Como, and Milan.  Mine perhaps this week was bit like a Larry David Sandwich trip but the quest for my 50th state, North Dakota, was never going to be an easy one. It also made me think about South Florida real estate which I’ll get to…..

Fargo, North Dakota

I’ve checked the linoleum box maybe three times in my 23 years in real estate. Usually it’s in a much older dated home and always confined to the laundry room. I didn’t know linoleum was back in style. But there it is in the western part of the Midwest. A giant linoleum store in Fargo North Dakota named Fargo Linoleum is one of the pillars of the downtown area.  You’d think a wood or tile store would be the norm.  It wasn’t a fluke either. I saw marble like linoleum in our hotel elevator in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  And the WWI Museum attendant older gent was telling me all about the decorative linoleum on the 2nd floor of the Kansas City museum.

Silos…

Kansas City is fun.  Went to Arrowhead watching Bears go down 34-0 at halftime and I didn’t even see Taylor Swift.  Then off to Omaha. Americans must eat a lot of corn. Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, South Dakata, North Dakota, and Minnesota is like one big corn field. Then the endless silos and John Deere vehicles dress it up as background accent furniture.  The Mall of America was all I thought it would be. Giant with amusement parks and a million places to eat.

And Corn Fields…!

There is a reason for all the linoleum, malls and corn though.  Linoleum flooring is water-resistant. Think melting snow when it melts off the galoshes. And why do you need an amusement park in a shopping mall? Easy. You can’t go to an outdoor amusement park in Minnesota when the average low is 6 degrees.

That’s why Florida is going to continue to grow at the continued rapid pace.  Take a look at the projected population through 2050 here…

Up north, there are no lifestyle communities. You can’t play golf, tennis, pickleball, equestrian riding, boating, or go to the beach in January in the Midwest. No eating outside when its 6 degrees.  Jack  Nicholson tried sitting outside in a cornfield in the winter.  It didn’t work out to well. Disneyworld has to be in The Mall in the Midwest.  Half the year is spent indoors. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, as they say.

So, while I love visiting the Northeast and Midwest folks in the summer and appreciate the popcorn they produce, there is a reason why we live in South Florida. This is why the population will continue to explode. Its why prices should continue to rise over the long haul. We also don’t need linoleum! If, you are expecting prices to fall, you must realize you are not in Kansas anymore.

Fargo, North Dakota
