Bear’s Club Chimney

A cute, unsubstantiated story about the The Bear’s Club real estate development made its way around golf circles. It seems during construction of the clubhouse, one of the members suggested a wrought-iron clock with Roman numerals be added to the chimney as players walked down 18 and the clubhouse came into view.

The member was very proud to see the ironworkers installing same a few months later and bragged to his friends that it was his idea.

At lunch a few months later, that member revealed he had an unusually large item on his monthly statement.  $21,000 for 1 wrought-iron clock. When teased about this, another member asked if he tore up the bill? His lack of response brought “you paid it???” Sheeply, the member just said, “I’m not going to get on the big guy’s (Jack’s) bad side”.
