Comparing Ben Carson’s Florida home with Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago about 15 miles to the east in many ways tells you much about their personalities and thought processes. Each owns homes in Florida and both are leading in the polls for the GOP nomination. Carson bought in a value community. Ibis is 5-10 miles farther out from Mirasol, BallenIsles, Old Palm, Frenchman’s Reserve, and Admirals Cove. The Buyer in Ibis gets more bang for their buck in a less expensive home. However, they miss out in having a location that is nearer the central part of town. Trump, on the other hand, bought Mar-a-Lago for $10 million ($3 million was furniture), along with some adjoining homes over the years. Palm Beach is the opposite of central West Palm Beach; glitzy, flashy, expensive, by the water, and near all of the action. It’s the best location in town. | ||
One could say that Carson, by choosing a quieter and more prudent location, would have a more internal type of management style. He will move more slowly and more methodically. Trump, on the other hand, by choosing Palm Beach, will be a deal maker, constantly in the mix with other people. Carson bought a home under market value that was already renovated. He is putting on a new roof. He pays dues to the club. Trump, through all sorts of complex negations, created a club out of nothing and makes money off of it. He didn’t just fix up the essentials, he restored it and made numerous additions, including a 20,000 sq.ft. ballroom, and cutting through ridiculous amounts of Palm Beach red tape to get all of it done in such a way that makes the Democrats and Republicans feel like they are in Kumbaya. | ||
My guess is that Carson’s home is worth $1,250,000; not bad for a $775,000 investment. Mar-a-Lago, on the other hand, is probably worth $250-$300 million. That’s OMG for a $10M investment. |
