Santa comes to Jupiter by boat!

November 24th, 2010

Here in Jupiter, Tequesta, and Palm Beach Gardens, we have waterfront property everywhere. From oceanfront condos to riverfront estates to homes on private canals, water is everywhere. Some communities like Admirals Cove and Frenchman’s Creek have private docks behind the homes as well as marinas if your yacht needs more room. So with all this waterfront access, Santa comes to Jupiter by boat!

The Annual Holiday Boat Parade is a big treat here. This year’s Parade is Saturday December 4th from 5:00-10:00 and the best viewing locations will be Riverwalk Events Plaza on the Intracoastal Waterway near the Jupiter Yacht Club or Sawfish Bay Park or the Jupiter Lighthouse Park.

To get to Riverwalk, take Indiantown Road east to US 1. Take a right or left on US 1. Go about a block, then turn west onto Coastal Way. Sawfish Bay Park is on Alt. A1A just south of the big bridge over the Inlet on the right side, and the Lighthouse Park is right at the base of the Jupiter Lighthouse.

The Riverwalk location will have a live DJ, performances by the Jupiter Dance Academy, vendors will have food and beverages, and of course an appearance by Santa. Riverwalk is protected, so inclement weather is not an issue. Bring a chair and enjoy the fabulous weather we have this time of year! Riverwalk is also an official Toys-for-Tots location, so bring an unwrapped toy for a needy child.

Many events are held throughout the year at Riverwalk and if you haven’t made it to one yet, make this your first! The weather is great, the music is great, and the parade is always a treat!

Jupiter Made Famous in 1696 – How Jupiter Homes Got A Name

May 30th, 2010

Jupiter once had no such designation. The town was known to the Spanish as Hobe, after the Hobe tribe of Native Americans who lived on Florida’s East Coast. There were no modern Jupiter homes or golf resorts. It was a time when the Spaniards were feared and anyone who ventured too far north was likely to be killed or enslaved to work on the emerging fortress of St. Augustine. Little changed over centuries and the tribe might have disappeared from history in obscurity had it not been for an untimely shipwreck on the Florida coast as a “fierce storm did arise” and doom the Reformation to her end. On board was a little known but very successful English Quaker merchant, Jonathan Dickinson, who had decided to travel to Philadelphia to expand his business in a bid to elude forever, Jamaica’s Port Royal, the “wickedest city on earth.”

Having been run aground by a storm, likely a hurricane, the ship’s passengers survived the shipwreck only to face a suspicious “rescue” party who alternated between abusive and hospitable. Finally, they were allowed, with meager provisions, to leave Hobe and make their way toward St. Augustine and ultimately, Philadelphia.

Jonathan Dickenson wrote a journal of his harrowing experience which was printed 22 times, making both him and the area ultimately named Jupiter (based on a mis-translation of Hobe to Jove, the Latin form of Jupiter)

Today, Jupiter homes, golf clubs and resorts populate the area once known as the home of “inhumane Canibals of Florida” as Dickinson’s journal’s lengthy title claimed. Now the choice real estate of America’s famous from Celine Dion to Bryant Gumbel, Jupiter homes are among the finest in the country.
