Lanae’s Singer Island Spotlight: Derelict Boats after Irma

September 29th, 2017

Derelict and sunken vessels have become an issue in Palm Beach County, especially around Singer Island following Hurricane Irma. A law went into effect a year ago, giving boat owners 30 days after being notified to remove or fix their derelict boat. If no action is taken, fines start at $50 then increase every month after that.

Despite the passing of the law, Gregory Reynolds, said more must be done to tackle this problem. Reynolds is the executive director of the Lagoon Keepers, an organization dedicated to keeping our waterways clean. The Lagoon Keepers cannot remove derelict vessels until law enforcement completes a derelict case on the vessel. This can be a long and expensive process and information tends to get lost along the way.

Law enforcement tends to lose track of boats’ owners. “You lose registration on a vessel, you lose contact on with the registered owner, and you don’t have anybody to turn to.” So far, the Lagoon Keepers have removed 15 vessels, bringing the total to 275 boats in the last 12 years.

See some photos of derelict vessels around Singer Island in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

Lanae's Singer Island Spotlight: 5 Things to Do in John D. MacArthur Beach State Park

September 7th, 2017

Open 365 days a year from 8am until sunset, John D. MacArthur Beach State Park offers something for everyone all year long. This 438-acre park of Florida beauty, located on the north side of Singer Island, is the only state park in Palm Beach County. Whether looking to relax for the day or go on a family adventure, you can have it all at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.

5 Things to Do:

  1. Swim or Snorkel

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park is a little different in that it offers beaches with some privacy. The reason for this is access to the beach requires a 10-minute walk or tram ride, but many think the solidarity is worth the it. On top of this, the snorkeling off the beaches of Singer Island is gorgeous, with turtles, tropical fish, and manatee sightings being a regular occurrence.

  1. Attend a Show

From November to April the park puts on a concert series called ‘MacArthur Under Moonlight’ from 7-9pm in the amphitheater. Enjoy some great music and gaze at the stars for only $5.

  1. Take a Walk

Every day the park rangers lead visitors on a one-mile walking tour through the park’s 4 distinct habitats: beach, estuary, natural limestone reef, and coastal maritime hammock. Admission to the walks is free and no reservation is required.

  1. Paddle Your Heart Out

Bring your own kayak and head out on an adventure. Cruise through the clear waters and mangroves surrounding Singer Island. If you don’t have your own vessel, the park rents kayaks at $30 for a single or $45 for a double. You can go out on your own or the rangers also lead a two-hour paddle tour.

  1. Shop Till You Drop

The gift shop offers the traditional items needed, such as towels, sunscreen, toys, and drinks. In addition, it has expanded to include affordably priced jewelry and art made locally.

Admission to the park is $5 for cars carrying two to eight people, $4 for single car riders or motorcycles, and $2 for pedestrians or bicyclists. The park is located at 10900 Jack Nicklaus Drive in North Palm Beach and the phone number is 561-624-6950.

Lanae’s Singer Island Spotlight: Sailfish Marina and Resort

May 22nd, 2017
Lanae’s Singer Island Spotlight: Sailfish Marina and Resort

One of the main reasons Palm Beach County and Singer Island have become synonymous with big game fishing is Sailfish Marina and Resort. Big game sport fishing came to Palm Beach County in the early 1900’s in the form of small skiffs rowed in from the surf. Several years later, the first cabin cruisers arrived on the scene. In the late 1940’s, a dock was constructed just North of the inlet for the burgeoning charter fleet of sport fishing boats specifically designed for offshore trophy fishing.

Today, we know this place as Sailfish Marina and Resort. Whether you are there to grab some dinner at the highly reputable restaurant, take your boat out for the day or just walk around, there truly is something for everyone. But how did this Singer Island staple get from then to now?

The dock went through a couple name changes over the years including “Roy’s Dock” and “Bill’s Marina” after long time owner, Bill Bachstedt. Many old time fishermen who still frequent the establishment refer to the Marina as Bill’s.

In 1977, Palm Beach inventor and entrepreneur, Alex Dreyfoos, purchased “Bill’s” Marina and another large dock just to the south, originally called Bahia Mar. Dreyfoos combined the two and an eventual third dock to make up Sailfish Marina and Resort.

For a quarter century, the establishment was under Dreyfoos’ ownership and became synonymous with big game sport fishing in the Palm Beaches. Over time, the marina gained a reputation as the “Yankee Stadium” of sport fishing. The business was bought in 2004 by American Financial Group, who to this day have been dedicated to preserving the Marina.

The Marina is in an ideal location, just a short 45 miles from the Bahamas. Each slip comes with full power, cable, water, and telephone connections. If you are looking for some nightlife on Singer Island, stop by the Marina for Sunset Celebration. This is an event that happens every Thursday from 6-9 PM and showcases local artists and musicians. You may find wood sculptures, pottery, watercolors, blown glass and a variety of music. The restaurant serves their famous “Grouper Dogs” and Conch Fritters.
