Palm Beach Places Unknown | Isla Del Coqui

December 9th, 2016

There are not too many places where you can get authentic Puerto Rican food in South Florida. Despite a large Hispanic population, most Latin restaurants are geared towards Mexican, Cuban, and various South American cuisines. But if you happen to be in Lake Worth, the Isla del Coqui restaurant has Puerto Rican dishes just like you would get on the island.

Located just minutes from West Palm Beach, the menu has enough variety to satisfy numerous palates at very low prices. Appetizers consist of the typical snack foods you can find in Puerto Rican cafes and street carts, such as Alcapurrias, Papas Rellenas, Pasteles, Bacalaitos, and Empanadas de Carne, as well as an assortment of soups.

The main menu consists of traditional lunches and dinners such as Arroz con Gandules (rice with chick peas), Mofongo (mashed plantains stuffed with your choice of meat), various pork and chicken dishes cooked in a variety of ways, and numerous sandwiches.

If you are on a strict diet, this may not be the food for you, as Puerto Ricans tend to make rich hearty foods, often fried or cooked with butter, and are not well known for their salads (or lack thereof). But if one high-calorie meal won’t cause you much harm, the delicious tastes of Puerto Rico are sure to not disappoint you.

Berry Fresh Café, Jupiter

Berry Fresh Café, Jupiter

Looking for a great breakfast spot in Jupiter?  The Berry Fresh Café should hit the spot!   The huge breakfast menu serves a number of homemade hashes, eggs benedict omelets and pancakes & Waffles.  The O.M.G. Homemade Corned Beef Hash has slow roasted brisket, chopped with tri-color peppers and potatoes.  Grilled and served with 2 eggs of your choice and a side of toast.    They also have Mexican Hash, Fried Green Tomato Hash, C’sest si Bon Hash (with pickled beet and goat cheese), California Hash, and Chesapeake Bay Crab Hash.  It’s like breakfast, lunch and dinner into one.

All sorts of pancakes. The lemon Ricotta and Upside Down Pineapple Pancakes sounded most interesting.  On the side is super crisp bacon, and awesome grits (try the OMG Shrimp-N-Grits).  For the budget minded they have a $6.49 big breakfast meal with coffee.  ( 2 eggs, red bliss potatoes, toast, two pieces of bacon or one giant buttermilk pancake, two pieces of bacon and coffee).   There are an array of salads, burgers, sandwiches, and Panini’s.

The atmosphere is one big great room decorated in yellow with brick accents.  Ceiling fans, flat screens, and an old fashioned menu chalk board can be seen from any seat. Lots of cute signs like “kiss my grits”.  The wait staff all have “Pink” Berry uniforms.

Berry Fresh Café is open from 7am to 3 pm.  Its located on 3755 Military trail, Jupiter Florida.  The phone number of Berry Fresh Café, Jupiter is 561-401-5693

Chowder Heads in Jupiter, Florida | A Restaurant Review

December 25th, 2012

Looking for a bit of New England in Jupiter, Florida? Missing those Lobster Rolls or the Ipswich Clams of Cape Cod? Well, look no further.

Chowder Heads is a moderately-priced, casual seafood restaurant located in the Driftwood Plaza in Jupiter, Florida. The atmosphere is great inside the eatery or sitting outside by the pond. Most important, the food is delicious! Lots of great appetizers to choose from. We chose the large Ipswich clams with butter dipping sauce along with a sliver of celery skin. Next time we want to go for the Crab Martini with sauce. The New England Clam Chowder was thick with lots of clams. The “soon to be famous” t-shirts that the wait staff were waiting for were right on target.

My wife and I split a Lobster Roll. We were tempted to get it with Mayo but went for the Southern New England Way, served with hot butter. The other item we split was the New Hampshire Salad Wedge. Crisp iceberg lettuce with blue cheese, bacon, beefsteak tomato, and a mouthwatering Vermont Maple Vinaigrette. I usually avoid this dish due to the heavy dressing, but the maple vinaigrette mixed with the blue cheese crumbles was the perfect mix. The kids split the Coconut Shrimp, which were huge. For desert we got the Boston Crème Pie and Apple Crisp. We will absolutely be back again. Too many things to try from McLaughlin Haddock, to oysters crab cakes to whole Maine Lobster.

Chowder Heads is located at 2123 US Highway 1, Jupiter, Florida 33477, and the phone number is (561) 203-2903.
