December 12th, 2016

Everyone’s favorite “Funny Girl”, Barbra Streisand lives in an oasis right by the sea. Streisand and husband, Josh Brolin, have made 6838 Zumirez Drive in Malibu their home since July 2009 when they bought the property for $16,500,000. The 8-bedroom, 11-bathroom, 10,485-square-foot estate is surrounded by water on three sides of the property, including the Pacific Ocean, a swimming pool, a lap pool, and a man-made pond with water lilies and a water mill.

The back of the home is painted white and faces the ocean, while the front actually resembles a large red barn. Streisand raises chickens on her property which she says lay green eggs. Her property also features extensive gardens with 100 rose bushes, including a rose named after her, as well as zinnias, dahlias, and snapdragons.

The walls of her two-story home are decorated with lots of artwork, including many early American portraits from the 1900s. One of Streisand’s favorites is a portrait of President George Washington. The other paintings feature women from the 1900s.

The home features a gym with a view of the ocean, but Streisand instead put a couch in the gym so she can read and enjoy the breathtaking view of the California coastline. A silo in the house features an elegant spiral staircase which Streisand said reminds her of a nautilus shell.

The singer/actress said she turned the basement of her home into a “street of shops”, including a doll shop with antique dolls and automatons, which are dolls that move. She also has an antique shop with a collection of antique clothing and some dresses and costumes on display which she wore in her films. Barbra calls one of the rooms her “gift shop”, where she keeps the many gifts she buys for friends and family.

The downstairs also has a root cellar/kitchen where she arranges all of the flowers from her garden and washes and stores the many things she grows on her property, including avocados and lemons.

Streisand said she decorated different wings of her home in different styles and colors. She likes her four-poster canopy bed and even puts stairs next to the bed for her little white dog, a Coton de Tulear named Samantha.

Streisand has been in the news lately since she was selected to receive the American Society of Cinematographers 2015 Board of Governors Award, which is presented to an individual who has made extraordinary achievements in advancing the art of filmmaking.

The 9-bedroom property is located on 3 acres and features a 9,200-square-foot modern home, 2 guest houses, and then a separate 3-bedroom house, all located at 1192, 1196, and 1199 Cabrillo Drive, a private street in Beverly Hills. The homes are also surrounded by trees to ensure Seacrest’s privacy on his sprawling estate. The grounds of the compound include a large rectangular lap pool, an attractive pond and gardens, a carport, and a long driveway. There is also a tennis court and 2 levels of gardens. Seacrest told Architectural Digest that he was looking for a home that would keep him away “from the hustle and bustle of the city.”

Just the entrance to the estate makes you feel like you are on vacation at some fabulous resort. The front entrance features giant palms and other plantings by Agua Landscape, as well as urns in front of the main entrance.

A curious feature of the property is a nearby, giant green tank. It is about the size of a medium house and could possibly be for water storage, but its exact function remains a mystery.

Seacrest combined antiques and modern furniture for his living room and has fabrics ranging from paisley to velvet to suede. His bedroom features a masculine wood and African look with a wood canopy bed. Seacrest said he wanted a bedroom which gave him “a feeling of peace.”

George Lucas' Home Infuriates Neighbors and Real Estate Enthusiasts Alike

August 31st, 2016

Filmmaker George Lucas always seems to be upsetting people. He wanted to expand his production studio in Marin County, California, but when he could not get the approvals because of all of the wealthy neighbors’ objections, he decided instead to use the property to build affordable housing, a community center, and pool for low- and moderate-income residents.

“We’ve got enough millionaires here,” Lucas told the media. “What we need is some houses for working people.”

As result of his plan, Lucas and even local officials have received lots of hate mail. Plans are still moving forward and they include an orchard and special housing for teachers.

But that is not the only real estate project that has caused problems for the Star Wars creator. Lucas also shocked everyone from real estate agents to neighbors when he tore down what architects called a “modernist masterpiece” to build his current oceanfront home in Carpinteria, California.

George Lucas_02

Lucas bought the 1.7-acre property and original 1981 house for $19.5 million in 2010 and in 2012 completely tore down the home which had been designed by sculptor and architect Sherrill Broudy. The home, which had been touted as Prado Lane’s finest and the best house on the beach, had incredible features such as walls of uninterrupted glass with panoramic views up and down the coast and an amazing outdoor area.

Lucas’ replacement home was designed by Appleton & Associates and everyone is calling it less of a masterpiece. The colonial-style home, complete with a wraparound porch, looks like it would be more at home on the northeast coast than on the west. Los Angeles architect Tom Marble described Lucas’ new abode as “Cape Cod Light, an invasive, non-native, systematically destroying a strain of modernism that evolved in this part of Carpenteria.”

George Lucas_04

Looking at photos of the 1981 home, it appears Lucas may have at least kept the original lap pool, but completely did away with the rest of the modernist landscaping and patio fountains. The expansive property has 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a detached 2-car garage. The guest house located towards the front of the property is bigger than most middle-class single-family homes.

Lucas is not involved with the new Star Wars trilogy currently in production and says that even though Walt Disney purchased his ideas along with Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney decided not to use any of his ideas in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Critics say Disney was not impressed with the storyline taken by Lucas and his suggestions and decided to go an entirely different route with the story.
