Lanae’s West Palm Beach Spotlight: A Newly Redesigned Waterfront

May 22nd, 2017
Lanae’s West Palm Beach Spotlight: A Newly Redesigned Waterfront

Can you imagine a completely redesigned waterfront in downtown West Palm Beach? Ecosistema Urbano, a Madrid-based design firm, recently won a competition for the best proposal to redesign the downtown West Palm waterfront area. The firm beat out more than 40 other international design teams in a competition organized by the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment agency and a New York think tank called the Van Alen Institute.

The winning proposal incorporates the implementation of themed ‘domes’ along the West Palm waterfront. These domes would be the first bioclimatic domes in the U.S. and would provide comfortable public spaces, even on humid and rainy days. As an example, there would be hanging gardens in the Cloud Forest Habitat Plaza and marine flora in the Aquarium Plaza. Yoga and meditation would be found in the Mindfulness Plaza and recreational activities for adults and kids would be located in the Playscape Plaza.

This proposal also includes a transformation of the Banyan parking garage into the “Banyan Hub.” Ecosistema Urbano seek to convert the garage to a mixed-use facility for uses such as art shows, farmers markets and platforms to view the West Palm skyline. It is an exciting time to be a resident of West Palm Beach with so many new projects to talk about. You can see a rendering of the proposal below.

Lanae’s West Palm Beach Spotlight: Peggy Adams Animal Rescue

Lanae’s West Palm Beach Spotlight: Peggy Adams Animal Rescue

The mission of the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League of the Palm Beaches is to provide shelter to lost, homeless and unwanted animals and to care for, protect, and find quality homes for homeless and neglected companion animals. This organization was created to advocate animal welfare, community involvement and education to further the bond between people and animals.

Peggy Adams is an independent, non-profit organization serving Palm Beach County and does not receive funding from the city, state or the federal government. They rely solely on the generosity of individuals, foundations and corporations to provide quality programs and services to the community. We are so lucky to live in a community that respects animals and has citizens willing to support this type of program.

One of their main initiatives is called “Countdown to Zero.” This is a public-private community collaboration, initiated by Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, the Board of County Commissioners, and Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League to bring animal welfare organizations together to end the euthanasia of adoptable animals in Palm Beach County.

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is a limited-admission humane society and provides services to over 40,000 cats, dogs, puppies and kittens each year. They have been operating continuously since 1925 and their vision is to create a community where 100% of the adoptable animals find loving homes and no animals will be euthanized because of pet overpopulation.

Take a look at what they were able to accomplish in 2016.

2016 by the numbers:

  • 45,234: Total number of cats and dogs that benefited by League programs/services
  • 5,781: Pets placed in loving homes
  • 7,594: Lost, injured or homeless cats and dogs were provided temp shelter
  • 333: Lost pets were reunited with their grateful guardians
  • 406: Active volunteers with over 20 hours donated each month

Lanae’s West Palm Beach Spotlight: The Kravis Center – Celebrating 25 Years of History

February 24th, 2017

Lanae’s West Palm Beach Spotlight: The Kravis Center – Celebrating 25 Years of History

The Kravis Center in downtown West Palm Beach is celebrating 25 years of history this year as the cultural jewel of Palm Beach County. Sitting atop the highest point in West Palm Beach, the center is a symbol of economic prosperity and a passion for the arts. Who is the person behind this thriving center of the cultural and performing arts? His name is Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr., an entrepreneur from New York with a big vision to transform the social fabric of Palm Beach County. Dreyfoos was convinced that Palm Beach County could not attract a well-educated work force without a cultural life and a place to hear the classical music he so much adored. He successfully brought his vision into reality in 1992, with a star-studded gala at the opening of the newly-constructed, fully-funded, Kravis Arts Center. Dreyfoos’s determination, with the help of some friends, resulted in a huge private fundraising effort, with an incredible $82 million of the $100 million in construction costs donated by private sources.

Why is the building called the Raymond F. Kravis Center, you ask? Raymond Kravis was a prominent geologist and philanthropist from Tulsa, OK. He wintered in Palm Beach for more than 35 years. A group of his friends from Oklahoma donated $7 million to the center with the stipulation that the building be named after their dear friend. Kravis, himself, donated $1 million to the center just a year after his friends’ contribution, as he shared Dreyfoos’s vision of constructing a cultural epicenter for Palm Beach County.

Today, the Kravis Center consistently ranks among the top venues of its size worldwide! The building is set on 10.6 acres, which includes 4 venues: the 2,195-seat Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr. Concert Hall, the 289-seat Rinker Playhouse, the 170-seat Helen K. Persson Hall, and the outdoor Michael and Andrew Gosman Amphitheater. With over 13,000 performances presented and an annual operating budget of $25 million, the Kravis is a gleaming example of a thriving performing arts center as well as a major communal and economic catalyst.  There have been over 10 million residents and tourists who have visited the center in its 25-year history and currently, the center has 11,000 members. When the Kravis opened in 1992, it was surrounded by vacant land. CityPlace shops and restaurants would not be constructed until 2000. The construction of the Kravis paved the way for the revitalization of downtown West Palm that we have all witnessed in recent years. The building continues to be a shining example of determination and the commitment the city has to promoting the fine arts.
