Singer Island Spotlight: Sailfish Marina and Resort

Singer Island Spotlight: Sailfish Marina and Resort

One of the main reasons Palm Beach County and Singer Island have become synonymous with big game fishing is Sailfish Marina and Resort. Big game sport fishing came to Palm Beach County in the early 1900’s in the form of small skiffs rowed in from the surf. Several years later, the first cabin cruisers arrived on the scene. In the late 1940’s, a dock was constructed just North of the inlet for the burgeoning charter fleet of sport fishing boats specifically designed for offshore trophy fishing.

Today, we know this place as Sailfish Marina and Resort. Whether you are there to grab some dinner at the highly reputable restaurant, take your boat out for the day or just walk around, there truly is something for everyone. But how did this Singer Island staple get from then to now?

The dock went through a couple name changes over the years including “Roy’s Dock” and “Bill’s Marina” after long time owner, Bill Bachstedt. Many old time fishermen who still frequent the establishment refer to the Marina as Bill’s.

In 1977, Palm Beach inventor and entrepreneur, Alex Dreyfoos, purchased “Bill’s” Marina and another large dock just to the south, originally called Bahia Mar. Dreyfoos combined the two and an eventual third dock to make up Sailfish Marina and Resort.

For a quarter century, the establishment was under Dreyfoos’ ownership and became synonymous with big game sport fishing in the Palm Beaches. Over time, the marina gained a reputation as the “Yankee Stadium” of sport fishing. The business was bought in 2004 by American Financial Group, who to this day have been dedicated to preserving the Marina.

The Marina is in an ideal location, just a short 45 miles from the Bahamas. Each slip comes with full power, cable, water, and telephone connections. If you are looking for some nightlife on Singer Island, stop by the Marina for Sunset Celebration. This is an event that happens every Thursday from 6-9 PM and showcases local artists and musicians. You may find wood sculptures, pottery, watercolors, blown glass and a variety of music. The restaurant serves their famous “Grouper Dogs” and Conch Fritters.
