Tom Hanks' Medical Warehouse

May 31st, 2016

Famed American actor and filmmaker, Tom Hanks, shares a home with his wife of 28 years down the street from where former U.S. President and actor Ronald Reagan once lived on Onofre Drive in Pacific Palisades, California. The exterior of the home has a very curious architectural style that is strikingly different from the other, much older homes in the area. It can best be described as “Medical Industrial Complex with an attached Recovery Pavillion”.

The couple purchased the home, which was built in 1996, for $26.08 million in 2010. The 1.5-acre property, which has a beautiful view of Rustic Canyon, features a large swimming pool and pool house, a carport, a semi-circular field, a 2-level limestone pavilion, and “support space” in a 3-story cube which resembles a medical official building.

The 14,513-square-foot home has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and lots of amenities, including a state-of-the-art kitchen and a theater. There also appears to be a large herb and vegetable garden arranged in stone steps leading down from the property.

The couple had been in the spotlight recently due to Wilson’s 2015 bout with breast cancer. Wilson, who had a double mastectomy and had to take a medical leave from the Broadway play “Fish in the Dark” where she plays actor/comedian’s Larry David’s wife, says her cancer and subsequent recovery brought them closer. Hank and Wilson spent time together at the home during Wilson’s recovery before Hanks traveled to Italy to play Robert Langdon in his third “Da Vinci” code film.

Historic Palm Beach | Little Red Schoolhouse

May 26th, 2016

The “Little Red Schoolhouse” had its first day of classes on March 1, 1886 in what is now West Palm Beach and was the first and only permanent school building in all of southeast Florida at the time. When it opened, Dade County consisted of an area the size of Massachusetts, stretching from the southeast tip of Florida, north through Stuart, and was nothing more than a swath of scattered settlements.

The Dade County School District received a grant from the county of $200 which covered the cost of the lumber for the 22’x40′ one-room building, and it was built by laborers from the area who donated their time. Furniture and supplies were purchased using another $200 which was raised by the Ladies Aid Society who sold embroidery and quilts in order to help the school.

The first class consisted of 8 students, ranging in ages from 7 to 17 years of age. Their teacher was Hattie Gale, a 16-year-old from Kansas who had moved to the area with her family in 1885 and who turned out to be younger than some of her students. The building remained in use as a schoolhouse until 1901 when the new 4-room school was opened at Clematis Street and Poinsettia Avenue in what is now Downtown West Palm Beach.

The Little Red Schoolhouse was then moved to the Palm Beach estate of John Phipps where it was used as a potting shed for four decades. The estate of John Phipps was sadly razed in 1960 and the school house was dismantled and moved to Phipps Ocean Park in Palm Beach.

The building was restored to its original appearance as a one-room school house in 1990 by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach and to this day it remains in Phipps Ocean Park, just a short drive from Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter, and a worthy site to visit during a trip to the beach.

Ving Rhames' Double Mansion Home

May 24th, 2016

American film actor, Ving Rhames, perhaps best known for his role as mob boss Marsellus Wallace in “Pulp Fiction,” and for his work in the Tom Cruise “Mission Impossible” movies, makes his home at two adjoining estates in Los Angeles. The actor, from New York, purchased the estate at 12935 Vicente Boulevard with his wife Deborah for $4.75 million in 2000, but not content with only owning one mansion on the block, he bought the property next door in 2005 for $6.5 million.

The first home has 10,613 square feet, 7 bedrooms, and 8 baths, while the second home has an additional 12,947 square feet with even more bedrooms and bathrooms than the first house to accommodate numerous family members and his many dogs. The complex also includes a private tennis court, swimming pool, and reflecting pool.

In 2007, Rhames received negative publicity when the caretaker for his dogs was found dead between a guest house and one of the main homes on the sprawling property. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said it was possible the victim died of a heart attack or other medical condition, but the man’s body had received multiple bite wounds from the dogs. Media reports said the attack was “horrific” and said that the man was found the next day by a relative of Rhames.

Rhames shares the home with his second wife, Deborah Reed, their two children, daughter Reignbeau and son Freedom, as well as Reed’s daughter from a previous marriage, Tiffany. Rhames also has two bull mastiffs which each weigh around 200 pounds and two English bulldogs. Neighbors said Rhames and his daughter often played outside with the dogs.

Rhames is currently filming the upcoming movie Bastards, due out in late 2016.

May 24th, 2016

If you are looking for authentic and delicious Thai food, look no further than the Malakor Thai Café, located in the Historic Northwood district of West Palm Beach, just a short drive from Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter.

thai_01

Malakor is the Thai word for papaya, a fruit that is often used in Thai cuisine. Many of the ingredients used at Malakor Thai Café are grown by the very chefs themselves, including the papayas, Thai chilis, and lemongrass.

thai_02

The restaurant has great Thai-inspired décor and the outdoor seating area has a great Pacific feel. The business is the result of a partnership of two Thai chefs who mastered their cooking skills in their native land of Thailand, and a Florida-born visual artist who is responsible for many of the artistic details and murals that can be found in the restaurant.

The diverse menu has something for everyone, even the sushi lover, and they will adjust the spiciness of the food to individual tastes. The food is well priced, with the lunch menu serving numerous traditional Thai rice and noodle dishes for $10.

Do Open Houses Work?

May 24th, 2016

New clients looking to sell their home or condo often ask if open houses work?  The answer is they do.  The home gets all sorts of extra exposure through all sorts of additional marketing.  We do ads in the Palm Beach Post, poem blasts (to 70,000), postcards, signs, and highlight on various open house websites.

Not satisfied? Take a read below about the open house our fabulous agent, Lanae Barneshosted and then sold in Lake Harbour Towers. Lanae can be reached at 561.236.9617 or lanae@JeffRealty.com

My boyfriend and I recently closed on a great condo thanks to our Realtor, Lanae Barnes. We stumbled upon an open house she was having, fell in love with the unit, and quickly made an offer. With her expertise we were able to purchase the unit for a fair price and she was kind enough to put a rush on the closing for us. I found Lanae to be “on point” with everything, making the process extremely easy for all involved. Whether you’re buying or selling, I would highly recommend her services.
